Frequently Asked Questions
How much are your rats?
As of January 2024 our rats are $100 each and this will never change based on gender or coat color. This is a price change but previous buyers will still have the price they originally paid honored. We do accept "payment plans" as you only pay half the price of the rats at four weeks old and the remainder at pickup. My pricing reflects the amount of dedication I put into my rats to perfecting them so you can have a positive experience with them. There's a reason why the majority of my buyers are repeat customers, and a reason why I almost never advertise, a reason why my rats are spoken for months in advance. There's a reason why my rats don't end up in shelters. Trying to negotiate a price with me is a slap in the face. My price also weeds out irresponsible owners or people who would use them for snake food. Many people see rats as disposable so I hope that having a higher price tag will put that type of thinking to rest. You get what you pay for, just read our reviews.
Do you ever have adult rats available?
Yes! These are typically only available to those who have already bought from me though.
Why do you inbreed your rats?
I frequently encounter inquiries about the practice of inbreeding in my rat breeding program. While conventional wisdom teaches us that inbreeding is undesirable, particularly in human populations due to the associated genetic risks, it is essential to recognize that the dynamics differ in the case of rats, yielding potential benefits.
Rats possess an extensive gene pool, with offspring attaining sexual maturity at a remarkably early age of 5-6 weeks, necessitating prompt separation to preclude underage breeding. In their natural habitat, rats exhibit a proclivity for breeding with various partners, as female rats enter heat every few days. In the wild, inbreeding becomes unavoidable, and if it resulted in the same deleterious genetic effects witnessed in humans, the rat species would likely not persist. Their position at the lower echelons of the food chain mandates rapid reproduction, a phenomenon encapsulated in the expression "breed like rabbits," which also applies aptly to rats.
Contrary to common perceptions, inbreeding in pet rat breeding serves a purpose. While it can manifest issues such as a weakened respiratory system and skittish or unstable temperaments, these challenges arise from the exposure of recessive genes that might remain concealed through successive outcrossing. Inbreeding offers breeders valuable insights into the presence of potential health issues within specific lines, enabling a proactive approach to breed away from them.
Remarkably, rats can undergo up to 50+ generations of inbreeding without directly experiencing defects attributable to inbreeding itself, as opposed to the manifestation of latent genetic traits. By engaging in careful inbreeding, I gain a nuanced understanding of the genetic landscape, enabling me to produce healthier and more predictable rat strains. Without this deliberate approach, there would be a risk of introducing genetically unpredictable rats into the public domain, a prospect that does not align with my commitment to responsible breeding practices.
